FIRE SAFETY IN APARTMENTS Article by P Mohan ., Sr. Faculty at NIFS

Apartments are constructed at a very fast pace to cater to the needs of many people who are migrating to cities/towns. This brings in the fire safety aspect an important parameter for the people living in apartments. Since any fire in apartments would spread the heat and smoke throughout the building quickly and also affecting the nearby buildings putting the life of residents at risk.

These following steps can eliminate the chances of a fire in apartment complexes.

1)    No overloading of plugs, this may result in plug getting overheated and causing fire, this is due to excessive load on extension boxes

2)   Ensuring the removal of plugs from plug points of heating appliances like electrical stoves and iron boxes after their intended use is completed else would initiate fire due to overheating.

3)    Appliances with damaged/broken wiring, should not be used, else a short circuit would initiate fire and also cause electrical shock.

4)   Electrical load to be distributed else circuit gets overloaded and damage the equipment and create a short circuit

5)    LPG cylinder should be always be kept from away from sources of heat, and well ventilated, With the number of electrical kitchen appliances increasing, LPG safety is a priority.

6)   BIS approved LPG appliances only to be used, regulator knob to be turned off and to be doubly cross-checked before going to sleep.
