BISCUIT GODOWN FIRE Article by P Mohan., Sr.Faculty.. NIFS

A major fire broke out in early hours of Saturday (03/8/19) in a biscuit warehouse spread over 2 acres near Vijayawada. Such was the fire that the entire warehouse was gutted and nearly six fire tenders were used for extinguishing the fire and 30 fire personnel were involved for about 15 hours to control the fire. This brings to the fore front the fire safety precautions implemented in any warehouse ( a large place where both raw materials and finished goods or stored prior to distribution ),

Ware house generally exists as a large single enclosed structure with no firewalls (or) fire breaks kept between one type of material to another type of material, thereby making the spread of fire easily to the entire area within short time, while the reason for the above fire looks to be from short circuit but an investigation will bring the actual reason.

Implementing the below basic safety measures would eliminate most of the accidents in warehouses / Godowns.

1)Material placement in warehouses to be rationalized based on the flammability and combustibility parameters and appropriate  fire breaks (or) firewalls to be designed to contain a fire at a limited space without spreading

2)Loose electrical fittings, naked wires, an improper extension of cables majorly lead to electrical short circuits leading to fire, Electrical fittings/ sockets should be of fire-resistant quality and drawing of electricity through extension boxes to be avoided.

3)Electrical panels should be completely isolated from the main warehouse

4)Systems should be in a place that all personnel involved in loading and unloading activities of materials are not allowed to smoke/ or allowed to carry any flammable material with them and to be trained properly

5)Improper lubrication in metal parts will generate sparks due to friction, all metal parts to be identified and to be secured, and wherever required to be lubricated
