"PUT SAFETY AT THE FOREFRONT" Article By Dr. Yashoda Tammineni, HOD, HSE Dept.

There is a tremendous need to promote the importance of safety measures to all walks of life and all sections of people. Due to the enormous increase in population and rapid urbanization the safety measures to be followed in different activities are also increasing simultaneously.

In spite of several safety practices in vogue the rate of risks and accidents are still at an alarming stage. Human loss and suffering due to accidents are immeasurable and so the importance of safety has reached its peak in all the major industries and productive units. To contemplate such conditions, it is not only essential to follow governmental rules and regulations regarding health and safety but also imparting proper training to employees also greatly reduce the chances of an accident.

Time and again, Industries that put safety first turn out higher quality products and services. Safety

CONSTRUCTION HAZARDS Article by Mr.P Mohan - Sr.Faculty., NIFS

The construction activity involves many jobs to be carried out like excavation, structural works, demolition, concreting, installation, flooring, plumbing, carpentry, etc. Due to the interaction of different works that are carried out a limited space, the risk involved in any hazard multiplies.

For example:

If people working on moving materials from one location to another location may not notice the wire newly laid for the purpose of electrical work, which they may trip and fall. The people working on electrical work may be aware but other people may not be aware of Frequent rotation of workers, even if skilled, many times result in accidents due to new environmental and project execution conditions and also the risk associated with any hazard changes with one construction site to another construction site even if the same work is carried.

Create a positive safety culture Article by Dr. Yashoda Tammineni HOD, HSE Department at NIFS

Safety Culture is the way safety is perceived, organized and valued in an organization. Safety culture is the end result of combined individual and group efforts towards an organization’s health and safety program.  It reflects the safety performance at all levels in the organization. It can be characterized as “the way we do things when no one is watching".

Safety Culture is about people and how they work together. Safety should become a part of everyday values and action, and not be seen as an ‘extra task’.

For a good safety-culture, the whole organization needs to be committed to safety-beliefs, values and mindsets that are reflected in all levels and departments within the organization.  The safety culture of an organization can make a remarkable contribution to changing employee attitudes and behaviors in relation to health and safety in the workplace and has a significant impact on reducing the number of incidents and injuries in the workplace. What does a Fire Fighter do?

The main duties of a full-time firefighter are to help protect the public in emergency situations. They respond to a wide variety of calls, such as car crashes, chemical spills, flooding, water rescue, and general rescue as well as fires. With many fire crews being trained as first responders they can provide first aid until the arrival of ambulance personnel. In addition to attending emergency call outs and rescuing people and animals from life-threatening situations, the job entails:

using sophisticated firefighting and rescue equipment promoting fire safety via talks, advice and training sessions inspecting and enforcing safety standards in commercial and residential properties
demonstrating the use of firefighting equipment performing practice drills working with police and ambulance service personnel undertaking physical and academic training checking and maintaining vehicles, equipment, hydrants, and water supplies All staff wears uniforms, and 24-hour shift work is a standard requirement of the job. The work can be stressful and dangerous but there is a great deal of job satisfaction to be gained from providing such a valuable service to the community.

There are two main divisions of a firefighter: full-time professional firefighters and retained firefighters. Apart from training, retained firefighters only attend the fire station during a call out and usually have another full-time job. They are employed in rural areas and must live or work within five minutes of the station

Typical employers of Fire Fighters

Firefighters are employed by: local authority fire services airports and ports the armed forces a small number of industrial organizations, such as those in the chemical, nuclear, gas and oil industries Competition for entry is intense. A lengthy and rigorous selection procedure includes a range of written, psychometric and practical tests.

Vacancies are advertised as they arise by individual services online and in local and regional newspapers. Specialist publications such as FIRE contain details of opportunities for qualified and senior firefighters.

Qualifications and training required
You can become a firefighter both with or without a degree. Academic qualifications are not necessary for entry, although a number of degree subjects including physical, chemical and materials sciences or engineering may be helpful, both for entry and later promotion.

Uniformed or emergency service experience may also be beneficial. Ongoing training is an essential part of the work: new firefighters start with three to four months of induction training and then a probation period of up to two years. After this, firefighters are encouraged to work towards relevant qualifications.

Key skills for Fire Fighters

National minimum entrance requirements state that all candidates must have good unaided eyesight and hearing and be 18 or above. In addition, a medical examination and various physical fitness tests must be passed. In terms of personal qualities, firefighters should be confident, resilient, flexible, strong team members, able to think quickly under pressure and able to communicate effectively.

A Day in the Life of a Safety Professional - NIFS INDIA

The role of a safety professional is no easy feat. The entire well-being of a company and its employees are in your hands. You’re tasked with determining the best way to prevent accidents, create a safe place to work, and get others to care about safety just as much as you do.

Not to mention, there are tons of rules and regulations that you’re expected to know and uphold.
Take a closer look at a day on the job as a safety professional – you might just find a new appreciation for your safety team.

Responsibilities of a Safety Professional

The biggest responsibility of a safety professional is simple: keeping employees, the company, and the surrounding community safe from safety and environmental hazards. The way this is accomplished isn’t quite so black and white.

Every day holds something different for safety managers and team members. One day might start and end with the same audit, inspection, or training, while other days may be filled with a combination of incident management, reporting, safety planning, and observing.

The core responsibilities are many. Since these are the ones who oversee all safety and environmental-related activities, their duties affect employees, leadership, government regulatory agencies, and the surrounding community.

These may include some or all the following:

Creating and reviewing safety plans
Providing ongoing training for all employees
Documenting work observations
Analyzing safety data
Managing incidents and associated reporting
Maintaining company and government compliance
Preventing workplace health and safety hazards
Creating sustainable practices for better environmental impact
This list is far from comprehensive. Duties will vary by company and size, especially smaller companies whose safety team may only have one or two people.

Daily Challenges

One of the biggest challenges of safety professionals, regardless of team size, is time management. Given the above sample list of regular duties, safety is easily a full-time job for multiple employees within a company, regardless of company size or industry.

With so much responsibility, getting tasks completed in a timely, impactful way can be difficult. From logging data to reporting hazards to the need to be everywhere at once, safety professionals must rely on the help of others, even if they aren’t officially part of the safety department.

Another major challenge many companies are currently experiencing is the transition from traditional paper records to digital platforms. In the past, documents and data were stored in filing cabinets. There was no easy way to compile data, collect insights, or quickly access information.

To overcome some of these challenges, many safety teams are using EHS software to streamline their day to day work. A central EHS management platform can log data on the go. It encourages self-learning by allowing employees to access necessary information (e.g. SDS, forms, important documents, checklists, data) on their own. Remote access gives teams the flexibility to use the platform for tasks even when they’re not on-site. And the digitization has made it easier than ever for safety teams to learn more about the information they collect.

Goals

The main goal of a safety professional isn’t just to avoid incidents, fines, and hazards. Every action taken by a safety department employee is to make the company a place where people want to work.
There’s no greater achievement for a safety professional than helping people care as much about safety as they do. It’s their job to help others see the impact of a safe workplace and want to participate to keep it that way.

It starts with creating a solid safety culture. This culture serves as the driving force behind every employee who prioritizes safe practices. By getting people to think of safety as something they want, not just something they need, safety managers have a better chance of creating a winning work environment for all.

Appreciate Your Health and Safety Professionals

Staying safe and protecting others is no walk in the park. While certain things like avoiding spills or evacuating a burning building may come naturally to some, the right course of action to take in most incidents isn’t always so obvious.
